In our club, we believe that Graphic Novels can't quite just be lumped in with other books. They simply focus on other aspects of writing and creation. Because of that, we have now added a section dedicated entirely to them.

50 Pixel Days Almost Left Me Speechless

A Review by Waldo-Not-Found

Really good, I don’t know how to start this review. It was good and funny. Summary: it’s a romance about a high schooler who gets a job as an illustrator for a dating sim app. There is a lot of drama and stuff. It is pretty short and I wish for an epilogue, but I will live without one.

Boys in Ballet: What "Coda" Did Right

A Review by Waldo-Not-Found

This is a really good ballet manga. It has really good drama in it, and yes, there is crossdressing in this comic. It's about a Japanese dancer who is secretly dancing ballet and meets a guy who is a famous ballet dancer who hasn’t had a partner ever since the last one got injured. It’s a good manga that I have kept going back to all of the time.

What I Wish I'd Known Before Reading Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016)

A Review by Waldo-Not-Found

I am writing this review having not read the entire series. I have read to issue 13 and there are 30 issues as of the moment. I am going to be writing this review on the second one with the dark trinity, which has Bizzaro and Artemis. So far, the comic has been good, and I feel bad for saying this, but I really dislike the way Jason Todd is presented. I would assume that it's better than the first Red Hood and the Outlaws that came out with Starfire and Arsenal. Starfire was put in there to be a sex object. The one that I should be talking about is the dark trinity. I like the back stories so far for all 3 of the characters. At some of the moments, I really dislike how the characters are drawn or how one moment everyone looks young and then in the next issue they look so much older with no explanation in the beginning why there is a change in the art style.

How Eve Ewing fixed a character in one issue

Written by Quite

If you keep up with Marvel comics, you will know that they have gone way downhill. SJWs have taken over Marvel and have written characters like Miles Morales and Iceman into the gutter. The age of good Marvel comics has seemingly ended. However, Eve Ewing has been given the Ironheart comics and is now penning them. Ewing decided to completely overturn and retcon the entire story. She even gave Riri a better suit! (personally, I would have gone with a red, black and silver color scheme, somewhat mimicking the iconic red and gold. The magenta and gold clashes with the silver and black horribly)

Ironheart #1 storywise is a major step up from what Riri originally was. She is still a fifteen year old supergenius that reverse engineered the Iron Man suit, but that wasn’t what needed to be changed. Everything that needed to be changed about Riri was her personality and how everyone reacted to her. She was a psychotic, petty, and rude token black girl that was forced into the story by writers who had no idea what they’re doing and only cared about an agenda. The amount of times I wanted someone to slap her over the head is absolutely incredible. However, Ewing (bless her soul) made her a person with believable motivations and an actually likeable personality. Her motivation is essentially survivor’s guilt. Her dad, stepdad, and best friend were all killed, two of them in a drive-by shooting, and she is wondering why it was them and not her. Survivor’s guilt is a motivation that is effective and relatable. They even did it with Batman. Personality-wise, she’s so much better. If she’s being a female dog, they treat her like it. She’s not this girl with a stereotypical Mary-Sue personality crossed with what feminists think is a “strong female character”. She’s bitchy, but not to the point where she’s entitled and people put up with it.

The fact that Eve Ewing, a woman of color, took up the challenge of fixing this trainwreck started by tokenism is poetic. If you’re going to write a black female main character, and you’re white, male, or both, you might wanna actually research. Half the people at Marvel don’t understand write what you know. I will never understand what it’s like to only be attracted to one gender, but if I’m writing something that entails that, I can always research. Write what you know can entail increasing what you know. I absolutely love how Ewing decided that if you want a job done right, you gotta do it yourself.

There’s more that I haven’t gotten into, and I’d highly recommend you read it yourself. If you’re into Marvel comics, please, PLEASE pick up the Ewing Ironheart comics.

-Finally, Quite has a reason to not hate this character.

Review for Nukoduke!

This manga is really good and super cute. It’s about Yuuya, a full-time part-timer and his two half-cat and half-human pets called nuko. I find that this story is super heartwarming and that it is so cute. The story, in general, is super cute and that is able to make you feel a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart with how cute everything is. This is definitely a good manga for beginners who want to read something heartwarming and cute. I would have to say that it is super long, but the chapters are really short. There are, at the moment on kissanime, 206 chapters for this manga.

Review for Hyakunen Renbo

So, this manga was really good when I first read it and when I read it again. The story is about Eva, a “witch” that has lived for a long time. She takes the youngest prince, Louis, as compensation for the time that she cured the oldest prince of his illness. Witches are traditionally despised, yet Louis forms a close bond with Eva and one day he is called back to the castle to take his father’s place as king. What will Eva choose? Will she go back to being alone or go with Louis?

This manga is really good and super short. It’s a good story that will maybe get you into liking reading. If you like the prince and princess kind of thing, go and read it. I would say that this is a good first read to start into graphic novels, and I would also say that this is good for when you want a quick read with an interesting story. From kissmanga it says that there are 8 chapters, and yes you can read it online and you can read it for free. So, if you don’t like the story, you won’t regret paying money for it.

GUNNM Review

GUNNM, formerly known as Battle Angel Alita, is a really good manga series that has cyborgs, androids, and other things that have to do with robots. It’s a sci-fi fantasy graphic novel that follows the story of a cyborg named Alita. She is caring, but she has a mysterious past (which I will not elaborate on). Throughout the series, Alita falls in love multiple times, and each time, I felt like I could understand her heartbreak and would eat ice cream and other things with her because the pain feels so real to me.

She gains and loses great friends in her life throughout the Scrapyard (a town in the series), which is far down below the Utopian city of Tiphares. She has many masters, and she takes quests to protect the innocent and to create a new life for herself.

So, that is the summary of it, and I want you to know that this series is so good, you can read it online, FOR FREE (and, it came out in the 1990s so it may not even be sold in stores in English). I would say that this manga is not for the faint of heart since there are a lot of gore scenes, and there are some nudity in it, but it’s mostly cyborg parts.

Recommended age of reader: 18+ for gore and nudity

Unfortunately, the local library only offers volumes 10 and 11. You can, however, find more information here: http://bit.ly/2F3lIgw

       Boku Girl Review

Okay, so this is my favorite series for graphic novels ever. I love the storyline (it’s fantastic). The art, OH MY GOD, the art is really good. I have reread this story 12 times, maybe more times, but it is still so good to read.

Boku Girl is about a boy named Mizuki Suzushiro. He has a girly face, since he was turned into a girl by the god Loki. Loki just screws around with Mizuki’s life for the fun of it. Mizuki is just questioning why he turned into a girl and is wondering how to he can become a boy again so he can confess to the girl that he likes. But, Loki messed that up, and Loki is making Mizuki question who he loves.

Yes, there is nudity in this. BUT, the story is so good. I fall in love with this series every time I read it, and yes, this one is free to read online. I am sure that there are a lot of websites that you can read it on.

Recommended age of reader: 16+ for partial, but detailed nudity

Animal Sense Review

I found this comic pretty funny, despite its length (about 13 chapters). The storyline is really good and entertaining to read.

Hoshino Fuzuki, a girl that accidently possessed a pigeon in the 3rd grade. She couldn’t believe it, but now that she is older, she has experienced the same thing again, just with a different animal.

I would say that this comic is really good for those who like the supernatural, but with a little bit of risque stuff going on. I would also say that is very engaging and appealing to the eye. The art, especially in regards to the animals, was amazing!

So, for the story, I think that it would be good for people who are not used to reading for long periods of time and that it is something that can get some people into liking different genres that they haven’t explored yet.

Recommended age of reader: 16+ for partial nudity
